Barr and District Burns Club celebrated their 71st annual Burns Supper last week.

Chairman Andrew Gillon extended a warm welcome to the gathered cronies in Barr Community Hall on Friday, February 3.

The joint winners of the Bill Dunlop memorial trophy for the Barr Primary Burns competition were presented the trophy and then recited their poems, with Grace Denham preforming ‘Ae Fond Kiss’ and Ollie Christine reciting ‘My Hoggie.’

The Haggis was piped in by Allan Brown and addressed by Peter Campbell.

And Andrew Gillon delivered the Selkirk Grace before a fine traditional meal, prepared by Ann Kennedy, was served to the company.

The Toast of the Immortal Memory was delivered by John Shirkie from Tarbolton, a member of the Batchelor Club in Tarbolton.

Songs were performed by Davie Anderson from Maybole, while retired MP Bill Grant performed ‘To a mouse’ and ‘Holy Wullies prayer.’

The toast to the lassies was delivered in a hilarious and traditional manner by Hugh McHarg from New Cumnock, while a reply to the lassies was given by Andrew Gillon.

The final act of the night was the toast to Auld Scotia given by Allan Brown, a retired policeman and now a landscape gardener in Girvan.

He had to move to England to become a policeman due to the height requirement in Scotland and gave a rousing toast to his Auld Scotia.

Alastair Sykes proposed the Vote of Thanks, thanking all speakers as well as the chairman, host, hostesses, and artistes.
