Beating the winter blues with Southport Dramatic Club

UPCOMING PRODUCTION: “Pressure” is being performed at the Little Theatre from February 23 - March 2 2024

We are really beating the winter blues at the Southport Dramatic Club this month. We saw the month in with the glorious romp, Elsie and Norm’s Macbeth. Southport Spotlights had us tapping our toes with their revue show, Encore.

Last weekend we were thrilled to take home four trophies from the NODA District 6 Awards evening. Congratulations to Abbie Strefford and Harry Corcoran, both securing best leading actor awards for The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.  

Paul Wilkinson won the best director award for this production, and also was the director of Lilies on the Land which won best ensemble. The cast (Jen Corcoran, Wendy Cox, Marilyn Fletcher-Hill and Lisa Tatler) were proud to accept this and acknowledge the brilliant contribution to the show of the unofficial fifth Lily, Lucy Mozley and their prompt, the late and great Lynne Hawksworth.

Our next play is a fascinating look back at a pivotal day in history: D-day. The acclaimed David Haig play “Pressure” is being performed at the Little Theatre on Hoghton Street from February 23 - March 2 2024.

Pressure focuses on Met Office meteorologist Group Captain James Stagg. Stagg is noted to have persuaded General Dwight D Eisenhower to change the date of the Normandy Landings from June 5-6 1944. Audience favourites Richard Michell and Ted Bullen feature as Stagg and Eisenhower, and Emily Parr makes a welcome return as Eisenhower’s secretary Lieutenant Kay Summersby.  

Overseeing the production as director is Michèle Martin, supported by Emma Wells Hall as assistant director and Janis Blackburne as prompt. This story is especially close to Michèle’s heart as her own father was one of the pilots that fateful day.

She relished the challenge of assembling a cast of 11 (including 10 men!), exploring and developing their characters and assisting them in representing military etiquette, posture and movement by bringing in a retired Coldstream Guard to offer wisdom and experience. This is a play that will entertain and educate in the best way.
