Big Newark Sleep Out raises £18k to help homeless youngsters
An incredible bit of fundraising that's been going on in your area
An impressive £18,853 was raised during The Big Newark Sleep Out, showcasing the community’s dedication to supporting vulnerable young people facing homelessness.
The money will be shared between YMCA Newark and Sherwood and the Newark Emmaus Trust charities, who invited the community to sleep out to raise money to support their work - and just under 100 people turned up for a night under the stars.
Held at the YMCA Village, the sleep out highlighted the harsh realities faced by those without a home while fostering a spirit of solidarity and empathy.
Newark and Sherwood Homelessness Team raised £4,224 which was the most money collected from a group, and Mathew Derbyshire from Tallents Solicitors banked an incredible £1,350.
Steffen Benbow, Executive Director of YMCA Newark and Sherwood, said: “The community’s response was incredible. The funds raised will significantly impact the lives of young people who rely on our services.
"We are grateful to everyone who participated and supported this event. Together, we are building a brighter future for those in need.”
Nikki Burley, Chief Executive of Newark Emmaus Trust, added: “The support we received from local businesses, the public and schools was overwhelming. Events like this not only generate essential funds but also raise awareness about homelessness and the challenges young people face in our community.
"It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to make a difference. I would like to say a massive thank you to those who slept out on what was a very long night and also to those that sponsored us all.”
The success of The Big Newark Sleep Out was made possible by the generous contributions of individuals, businesses, and local organisations, such as Buttercross Estates and Reuseabox for providing the cardboard boxes used to create makeshift shelters.

Additionally, schools and nurseries supported the event by holding a pyjama day and fundraising initiatives. They included Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, Barnby Road Academy (pictured above), Lovers Lane Primary School, Sir Donald Bailey Academy and YMCA Nursery.
The money raised will go towards supporting various programmes and services aimed at alleviating homelessness in the community. Both YMCA Newark and Sherwood and Newark Emmaus Trust are committed to providing essential resources, guidance, and support to help young people build stable and independent lives.
Registrations for next year's event on March 7 2025 will open soon.
