Q&A: Bored of running laps? Jog on beyond Canary Wharf's boundaries

A: I’m surprised you’ve lasted this long running multiple laps in such a busy environment.

We’re blessed locally with a variety of beautiful, pedestrianised running routes so I’d suggest venturing further afield.

From the estate, you can head in various directions choosing between river, canal and road.

Head along Canary Riverside to Limehouse where you can pick up a spectacular river route at the end of Narrow Street – you only surface onto a main road at St Katharine Docks and even then you can soon re-join the river. There and back should suffice for 10K training.

You can also head into Limehouse Park and find your way up the canal towards Mile End Park and Victoria Park at the other side of the Limehouse Basin. This is pretty, but busy with runners, cyclists and pushchairs.

If your sense of direction leaves something to be desired and you don’t mind running with your phone, apps such as MapMyRun and Strava will help you create personalised routes that aren’t just based on location. You can, for example, select a route with minimised elevation.

Do spend time in the parks you run through too. Strength training is a must for runners of any level and park benches make good multi-gyms, providing a great base for both upper and lower body moves.
