A food poverty organisation in Bradford is raising funds with a food aid appeal to help children suffering in Afghanistan.

Charity Right is currently aiming to reach a target to feed over 1,000 school children experiencing hunger and extreme poverty.

Funds raised will go to school meals to be provided to children in and around capital, Kabul, suffering as a result of drought, conflict, flash floods and Covid-19.

Children are being dramatically affected by poverty experienced across the country, with half of all children under 5 years old facing acute malnutrition.

After the government closed schools in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, over 10 million children went without education and a protective environment.

Sajad Mahmood, CEO of Charity Right said: "Our plan to offer school meals gives a lifeline to Afghan children living in poverty.

"Not only do the meals improve nutrition levels, but they also act as an incentive for children to go to school, get an education and open up future opportunities to relieve them from the poverty cycle."

In such a serious socio-economic state, Afghan families are sending their children to work in order to survive, stripping them of the opportunity for a brighter future.

Unlike many Afghanistan food aid appeals, which focus on immediate emergency support, Charity Right plan to provide school meals until children reach adequate BMI levels.

The charity state that just one £10 donation will provide enough school meals to feed a child for one month, with a donation of £120 feeding a child for a whole year.
