Bradley nursery given 'good overall' Ofsted rating

Children in a rural Cheshire West and Chester nursery are lively, inquisitive and eager to learn, according to Ofsted.

The conclusion was reached by inspector Chris Scully following a visit to Bradley Barns Nursery at Bradley Farm, Bradley near the England/Wales border. Rating the effectiveness of the nursery as good overall the inspector said the same applied to the quality of education, the behaviour and attitudes of the youngsters, their personal development and the leadership and management of the group.

"Children are lively, inquisitive and eager to learn. Staff have high aspirations for children and plan an exciting range of learning opportunities," said the inspector.

They show they feel safe at the nursery and older children eagerly told the inspector about how they keep themselves safe when attending forest school. The youngsters develop a love of reading as they share their favourite stories with staff. They behave well.

Older children are confident to take the lead in activities and explain to each other what they need to do as staff are 'positive role models' who treat the children with respect.

The nursery is led by a 'committed and passionate manager'. Children are provided with 'a fun and stimulating curriculum' that engages their interests and enables them to make progress. Exploring the farm and forest school activities are a 'key strength' which significantly enhances the children's confidence.

Their enthusiasm for their outdoor surroundings is 'infectious'. Parents are 'very complimentary' about the nursery and comment on the progress their children are making and the 'excellent' communication from the staff. At the time of the inspection the nursery was caring for children age 0 to 4.

There were 52 places and 64 youngsters on roll. The nursery registered in 2016 and employs 15 members of child care staff. It opens from Monday to Friday, all year round with nursery sessions from 7.30am until 6pm. Out-of-school sessions are from 7.30am until 9am and 3.30pm until 6pm.

During the visit, among other aspects, the manager joined the inspector on a learning walk and talked about the curriculum and what the nursery wishes the children to learn.

The inspector observed the quality of education being provided, indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this was having on the children's learning.

Parents and carers shared their views with the inspector who made two suggestions for further improvement at the nursery.
