Calls to community to send birthday cards to 100-year-old veteran resident

Carers at Colonia Court Bupa Care Home in Colchester are calling on the local community to send in birthday cards to a well-loved resident and Second World War veteran. Douglas (Doug) Felgate is celebrating his 100th birthday on February 14.

Carers are hoping Doug will receive as many cards as possible to help celebrate the milestone. On the day of his birthday, Doug will enjoy a homemade afternoon tea and musical entertainment at the home with his fellow residents.

When asked his secret to a long and happy life, Doug said: "You never know when your time is up, so live for today."

Jiji George, home manager, said: "We are really looking forward to Doug’s 100th birthday. We are hoping the community will send as many cards as possible to show him how truly special he is.

"Marking milestone birthdays is incredibly important to us at Colonia Court - we love making a fuss of every individual resident and Doug is truly a character to be celebrated."

Doug was born and raised in Colchester and went to school at The Colchester Royal Grammar School. At age 16, he started at the Youth Employment Bureau as a junior clerk and at 18, he went to war in the RAF as a radio mechanic.

After the war, he went back to his job in the NHS as a junior clerk in the health department. Doug didn't apply for his Second World War medals until 2023, when Colonia Court's activities coordinator, Dawn, helped him order them.

He was eventually presented with the 1939-1945 Star Medal, Italy Star Medal and the Second World War Victory Medal by members of the RAF on his 99th birthday.

If you would like to send a birthday card to Doug, please address it to: Colonia Court Bupa Care Home, St Andrews Avenue, Colchester, CO4 3AN.
