Campaigner for Sefton makes case for 'welcome support package' for business chains operating in old builds

COMMUNITY CAMPAIGNER: David Barton

By David Barton

A campaigner for the heritage of Sefton is proposing his local authority and central government enhance their efforts to combat the climate crisis by providing a series of financial incentives to those occupying older properties.

The Sefton Climate Change Strategy was launched following the Council’s own commitment to combating the climate crisis in 2019. Alongside identifying, educating and encouraging people to live more sustainably, there have been ongoing ways to integrate this into everyday life and across all ages and backgrounds.

Mr Barton believes that there are many approaches that are still not being adopted or integrated that account for a greater overall percentage of the caron storage capacity of the Borough. One particular focus of his case is the retention of voluminous carbon-storing historical properties that have been increasingly demolished since the Sefton Climate Emergency was first declared.

David Barton is endeavouring with his overarching campaign to bring levelling up growth to the Borough. He has been trialling Birkdale Village as a live action road map of how Levelling Up can be achieved on a local basis with the potential of his concepts being formally adopted by all tiers of Government.

The community campaigner has combined theory with practical application in the hope of delivering change beneficial to everyone in society, whilst respecting the environment. In providing solutions to common day problems, it is hoped this will bring immediate and far-ranging advantage for all irrespective of their background or views through actively engaging with people’s concerns in a meaningful way.

Mr Barton says: “It is a widely accepted fact that Old Builds conger the best functioning carbon stores across the Built environment arising from their wholly organic construction materials. In order to best maximize this significant environmental piece on the chessboard, it should be noted that there are additional further ways to compound their effectiveness through the various green proofing measures now freely available in the 2020s.

"Unlike carbon offsetting this tackles the issue of reversing the level of carbon presently found in the natural atmosphere. These can range from enhanced heating systems to assimilation of clean energy technologies all proven to make a real-time difference towards improving the planet.

"It is for this reason that these same resources should be offered to persons and organizations which continue to make proactive efforts already by choosing to occupy carbon rich structures. Alongside eradicating the wasteful and exorbitant demolition of any more long-beloved historical properties, it really is a clear fact that Old Builds provide far much more to society besides the stunning vistas and backdrops that they provide.”
