Members of a group of women in Stafford are raising awareness of the benefits of Toilet Twinning.
At a recent Soroptimist International of Stafford meeting, all members wore something blue (Blue For a Loo) and made a donation, raising a total of £120 - enough money to purchase two toilets.
Toilet Twinning is an enterprise which invites people to 'twin' their toilets with latrines in poor communities, enabling people to have a proper toilets, clean water and to learn about basic hygiene. 40 per cent of the world's population do not have a loo.
Every day 700 children, under the age of five years, die because of no sanitation and unsafe water. Toilet Twinning is an excellent way to tackle a serious global issue.
Stafford Soroptimist members invite the residents of Stafford to join in and help to make Stafford a Toilet Twinning Town by donating a Twinned Toilet to communities in the world who have no sanitation.
Toilet Twinners receive a certificate with a photograph and the location of their twinned latrine.
Michelle Daws, a member of Soroptimist International of Stafford, said: “Please help us flush away poverty one loo at a time.
“By donating to help raise £60 to twin your toilet, you help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and to learn about basic hygiene - a vital combination that saves lives.
“We are leading a revo-loo-tion to make Stafford a Toilet twinning Town, hoping that all communities like churches, schools, cafes, restaurants, businesses, charities, will help to show that the residents of Stafford care about the less fortunate in the world.”
So far the group have done the following to raise funds for Toilet Twinning, reaching a total of more than £1000:
- Stafford club members dressed in blue to attend a meeting and made donations
- Members purchased a Twinned Toilet as Christmas presents for family and friends
- Had display stands at two events in Victoria Park, Stafford and accepted donations
- And on United Nations World Toilet Day, members attended a Christmas Wreath making session, dressed in blue and placed a small blue bow on each wreath
Soroptimist International is a global voice for women that aims to educate, enable and empower women and girls towards a better life for themselves and their families.
