Ayrshire cancer charity celebrate 40 years by honouring dedicated volunteer drivers

A ride out event to show appreciation for volunteer drivers who help transport cancer patients to hospital appointments takes place on Sunday.

Ayrshire Cancer Support is hosting the event- exclusive to staff and drivers- to celebrate their 40th anniversary and say thank you to those who have kindly volunteered their time towards the transportation service.

The community are invited to celebrate drivers’ efforts virtually through ACS’s social media channels.

The drivers will congregate at Kyle Academy on Sunday, March 20, before proceeding towards the Ayr centre on Prestwick Road, through to ACS’s Kilmarnock centre on Dundonald Road and on to the final stop at Puffers Café in Irvine.

Volunteer driver Yvonne Morrison, who has been donating her time towards the transport service for almost 40 years, said: “It has been an amazing journey through the Ayrshire Cancer Support group, the group has expanded beyond belief from the early days.

“I hope to continue for many years supporting patients- the patients have also been a great support for me."

Yvonne (pictured) received the British Empire Medal (BEM) back in 2016, which she accepted on behalf of the volunteer drivers and all of her patients.
