More than 10,000 children dressed in reindeer antlers or elf hats have helped raise over £80,000 for a hospice in Farnham in Surrey.

In total, 44 schools took part in sponsored runs for Phyllis Tuckwell, a scheme which is held every year in the lead-up to Christmas.

All of the money raised helps fund the supportive and end of life care which Phyllis Tuckwell provides for local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.

Charli Quay-Barnham, community fundraising manger at Phyllis Tuckwell, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all the pupils who took part in a Reindeer or Elf Run, all of the teachers and parents who organised the runs and cheered the children on, and everyone who sponsored them.

“As the NHS/Government usually only covers 20 per cent of our costs, we have to raise over £25,000 a day to be able to provide all our services, which we offer free of charge to our patients and their families, and the Reindeer and Elf Runs contribute significantly to this.”

£83,000 is enough to pay for over three weeks’ care from Phyllis Tuckwell’s Hospice Care at Home (HCAH) team, supporting over 40 patients over those three weeks.

The HCAH team visits patients who have chosen to spend their last days in the familiarity and comfort of their own home or care home, offering compassionate nursing care and emotional support.
