Two friends from Clacton, Essex, are planning to climb mountains and cycle over 300 miles to raise money for a local mental health charity.
After many months in lockdown, Phil Tomkins and Rob Thomas are aware of just how much the isolation and loneliness has affected so many. They are now both training to complete a mammoth physical challenge to hopefully meet their fundraising target of £10,000 for local mental health charity Mid and North East Essex Mind.
The iconic Three Peaks Challenge will see the outdoor adventurers climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours on Friday, May 27.
Once they have completed the climb, the fearless friends will take on a four day, 321 mile bike ride back to Clacton.
The cyclists will break the journey down into four legs:
- The first leg will be from Snowdon to Shrewsbury (78 miles)
- The second leg will be from Shrewsbury to Coventry (77 miles)
- The third leg will be from Coventry to Hemel Hempstead (82 miles)
- The forth leg will be from Hemel Hempstead to Clacton-on-Sea (92 miles)
Phil said: "I know that over the past few years its been extremely tough for a lot of people. I decided I would like to try and help, so I'm doing this to raise awareness and money for Mid and North East Essex Mind.
"The target is very ambitious but I believe with support we can hit it."
Stephanie Mills, marketing and fundraising manager at Mid and North East Essex Mind, said: "Many charities have found it tough to raise money over the past two years.
"We are incredibly grateful for Phil and Rob for taking on this challenge in support of us. Our services are needed now more than ever and support such as this allows us to grow and develop our mental health services locally."
