College initiative encourages students to read more
A-level students from Coleg Llandrillo organised a reading initiative at the college’s library, to promote World Book Day and International Women’s Day.
The ‘D.E.A.R’ (Drop Everything And Read) event, which took place at the Coleg Llandrillo's Rhos-on-Sea campus, concentrated on the theme of women in literature, combining the two initiatives.
Books including classics, autobiographies and teen fiction from the library were displayed, and a Padlet was created where students could add their own recommendations of books, female authors and inspirational female figures from across the world.
The group’s tutor, Gemma Campbell, said: “All of the students were excited to have the opportunity to take part, and chose to wear something purple. One of the students, Elin Jones from Abergele, baked cupcakes, topped with edible purple glitter frosting in support of International Women’s Day.
“They have also discussed and explored the female authors display in the classroom and in the next few weeks are creating a book swap library for Rhos Sixth, to expand their reading opportunities beyond just the set texts for their course.”
