Planning chiefs are poised to back plans to build 16 flats at the former Croft pub site in Runcorn.

Halton's development management committee is due to meet at 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 7, at Runcorn Town Hall to decide the application from Widnes-based SJJ Contracts.

The scheme has been recommended for approval, with only one representation from a member of the public who raised concerns about the "future tenants" and antisocial behaviour (ASB) alleged to be "already happening" in nearby woods.

In response a planning officer said no evidence had been provided to support such "fears", adding that the flats would increase the level of "natural surveillance" for existing ASB problems.

The report said highways officers had initially objected to the plans due to a lack of "priority" given to pedestrians and cyclists with parking for all deemed "insufficient", and the absence of evidence to show it was close enough to a bus stop, but that since then they have accepted the subsequent amendments made by the applicant.

Secure bin stores formed part of the plans, it added.

It said: "Secure bin storage is also provided to the front/side of the proposed building.

"Secure cycle parking is provided to close to the building and within the enclosed amenity area for security and adequate surveillance.

"Additional cycle stands are provided for visitors.

"It is considered that the proposal meets the design requirements of the council and is appropriate for its location."

The report said The Croft pub, on Halton Lodge Avenue, shut in 2014.

The site has been vacant "brownfield" land since 2020 when the derelict public house suffered a fire and was demolished.
