Dartmoor joins in the games for sustainability and wellbeing
Dartmoor National Park is an official partner, and has set a challenge for people to ‘connect with nature, mindfully’
CONNECTING with nature will be at the heart of the Planet Earth Games throughout February, with Dartmoor National Park playing its part.
The aim is to help people connect with nature, look after it and get healthy at the same time.
There will be a month of sustainable, virtual and free challenges, suitable for all ages and abilities. They range from physical exercise to those with a focus on mental wellbeing or caring for the environment.
Dartmoor National Park is an official partner, and has set a challenge for people to ‘connect with nature, mindfully’.
The challenge is to find a small patch of woodland, preferably near to home in order to reduce carbon production and stay within Covid-19 guidelines.
People are encouraged to spend time taking in the environment, paying attention to their senses and appreciating the beauty around them.
Dartmoor National Park’s Orlando Rutter said: “Taking time to really connect rather than just being active in natural environments has been shown by research from the University of Derby to have benefits for mental wellbeing as well as increasing pro-environmental behaviours.”
Dartmoor was the first National Park to declare a climate emergency in July 2019. Over the last 10 years the Authority has reduced its carbon footprint by 50 per cent and has adopted a Climate Action Plan so it can continue doing its bit to look after the natural world.
Planet Earth Games is a not-for-profit organisation which launched in 2019. It is aimed at helping people be healthy while keeping the planet healthy too. It is the world’s first environment-hemed multi-sports event.
Games chief executive Chris Broadbent said: “We know it is a tough time for a lot of people and with Planet Earth Games we hope we can bring a bit of sunshine into the winter, help people keep sight of the importance of their own wellbeing and the health of the planet.
“Sustainability doesn’t have to mean sacrifice. It can be fun discovering and trying new things. We have terrific challenges all month and can’t wait for people to get involved.”
