Deighton Carnival is back for its 23rd anniversary FREE event

Carnivals, festivals, fetes, galas and family fun days have been happening in the Deighton and Brackenhall area throughout the 1950s and 60s.
The Deighton carnival as we know it today, first took place in August 2002 at the Deighton Centre in Huddersfield. The vision coming from the D.B.I - Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative.
The theme for the first event was Deighton by the Sea and it took place on the front car park. Although on a very small scale the event was very well attended.
After the success of the first one, it became an annual event and the last Saturday in June was set as its official date.
Now established as a permanent fixture - with more than 10,000 people attending last year - this year's will be its 23rd anniversary. Running from noon until 7pm on Saturday, June 29 at the Deighton Centre in Huddersfield, it's still a free family event.
Among the highlights this year will be a project between Kirklees Libraries and the British Library who are celebrating 50 years of black music and culture in the area.
The opening of the carnival is scheduled for 1pm with the procession making its way around the Ashbrow Ward arriving back at the centre at around 2pm, where the field activities will already be in full swing. Tuckers Fun Fair will again be in attendance with various rides.
This year's Deighton Carnival will feature a young people’s music arena, Ras Amharic Roots and Culture Arena, plus a music arena for the older music fans.
This year's headline act will be reggae star, Kahpun who hails from Ghana. Also look out for:

Lil Jam - Teen singing sensation - real name Jamelia K Sadiq - who started her music journey at the age of eight when she performed at a sell-out show in London
Tribal Shoots - Local band back by public demand. An energetic 3-piece band
Isle in Harmony - A favourite of the Deighton Carnival Street procession
Pure Elegance - They performed in street processions at many UK Carnivals
