Derby choir The Derwent Singers reach the finals of the Midlands Choir of the Year

One of Derby’s premier chamber choirs, The Derwent Singers, have made it to the final of a regional competition where the winners will be crowned Midlands Choir of the Year. Having surpassed a number of high quality ensembles in the semi-finals, the choir is now one of six finalists, the only one from Derbyshire, who will perform at Lichfield Cathedral on July 7, in front of a live audience and expert judging panel.

Each finalist must prepare a short, varied programme of music that showcases the talents of their choir. The winners will take away £1,000, in prize money, with the audience also able to vote for their favourite choir, who will take away £500.

The Derwent Singers were formed in Derby in 1968, and have been performing in and around the city ever since, gaining a reputation for high quality a capella performances, with music spanning several centuries from Medieval to the present day. In 2018 they celebrated their 50th Anniversary with a special concert at Derby Cathedral, and have recently returned from a short tour to the South West of England.

They approach the finals under the baton of their musical director, Dexter Drown, who said: “We’re all very excited by the news about the finals and very much looking forward to performing to the audience and judges at Lichfield to really show them what the Derwents can do. We’d love to see as many supporters there as possible, so do buy a ticket.”
