Explore the history of Reading's cinemas on Valentine's Day

Join a fascinating afternoon talk with tea and cake uncovering the past history of Reading’s Cinemas with writer and film researcher David Cliffe.

The talk takes place on Wednesday, February 14 from 2pm to 4pm and is at the Centre for Heritage & Family History in Abbey Square in Reading, Berkshire.

David worked in a variety of positions at the public library in Reading for the entirety of his career in a variety of posts, the last one being Local Studies Manager. He is the author of several books, the most recent being Picture Palace to Penny Plunge: Reading Cinemas, which will be available to purchase during the afternoon.

At the talk, David will describe the history of the single-screen cinema in Reading, from the travelling shows at the turn of the twentieth century, its heyday with the Vaudeville Electric Theatre in the 20s, through to today's multiscreen entertainment 'villages' and outdoor screenings.

Tickets cost £5 but tickets for members of Berkshire Family History Society are £4. Booking in advance is highly recommended, but turn up and you can pay on the day, if places are still available.
