Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to make sure that they have working smoke alarms in their homes, after conducting research that found the Maldon district has the lowest smoke alarm ownership in the county.

The fire service said it carried out a survey in 2018 across Essex to find out how many people had working smoke alarms.

It found that 80 percent of people in Maldon, Essex, had working smoke alarms in their homes, whereas the average across the rest of the county was 91 percent.

With March being National Smoke Alarm Testing Month, ECFRS said it wants to raise awareness about the importance of having working smoke alarms.

ECFRS has also reminded people that it offers to fit free smoke alarms to any homes without a working smoke alarm on every level of the home during a home fire safety visit.

Crew manager Nick Trice, from Maldon Fire Station, said: “We want every home in Essex to have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and would urge everyone to test their smoke alarms at least once a month.

“If you or someone you know doesn’t have working smoke alarms at home, we can supply them for free during a home safety visit.”

More information about booking a home fire safety visit can be found on the ECFRS website.
