Free classic bus rides at popular gala this weekend

This weekend's classic bus gathering and railcar gala at the Great Central Railway's Quorn & Woodhouse Station is a great opportunity to sample the buses and trains we knew in our childhoods. With very frequent free bus rides on several routes, and a mixed steam and diesel railcar train service, there is something to appeal to all ages.

The ever-popular event is expanded to two days with over 50 preserved buses and coaches spanning eight decades expected on Saturday, May 18, and around 35 on Sunday, May 19.

Richard Bruce, the Trust's event director said: “Our event at Quorn grows and grows. Classic bus owners love bringing their vehicles to our event and transport enthusiasts, together with the local community, appreciate the opportunity to ride on a wide variety of vehicles. Families always tell us what a good day they have had. We have four free bus routes, some of which allow you to combine a bus ride with a train trip on the Mountsorrel branch line. Short-distance railway tickets as well as all-day runabouts will be available.

This year's event sees the re-emergence of a very popular type of Leicester bus from the 1980s. Visitors will be able to ride on Leicester City Transport Bristol RE TRY122H for the first time in over 30 years after an extensive restoration project by its owner, assisted by Trust volunteers.

On the railway, there will be a frequent train service, with two steam locomotives running and three railcars dating from 1950s to 1980s. Car parking will be available in the field adjacent to Quorn and Woodhouse Station. Free buses run from Loughborough's East Midlands Railway station for those coming by public transport.
