Gardening volunteering youth scheme could strengthen employment prospects

Sefton campaigner, David Barton believes that a voluntary youth scheme, in conjunction with local schools and voluntary groups vould help maintain the Borough's parks and green spaces.

He is suggesting that Sefton Council could engage with schools and colleges as a starting point, with a focus on those 16 plus who may be seeking to enhance their CV for employment and Higher Education. In order to facilitate the logistics, the Council would be best placed to make concerted funding grant applications for items, such as Public Liability Insurance, etc as and where required.

Mr Barton says: “Abbey Garden, based at Liverpool Road is a prime example of a local greenspace, which whilst already well cared for looked after, would be a great site for a smaller sized group that are very new to gardening and perhaps less confident about outdoor volunteering generally.

"From my own experience at school, it can often be challenging to find a placement for work experience if not just as a pastime and the options that are available can often seem repetitive and lacking variety with seldom opportunities to spend time outside.”

“Not only would this maximize everyone’s contribution, but this would serve to reduce the workload of existing volunteering groups. Best of all this would provide a combined green tinged output that may even support future funding grant applications for things, such as improved infrastructure highly sought after.

“As a past active member of The Lord Street In Bloom Volunteers and Friends of Kings Gardens, I can attest myself as to the benefits of having additional support when preparing for special year round events alongside keeping the area presentable to the appropriate investors that appreciate Victorian and Edwardian timepieces.”
