Give the gift of time as health charity launch volunteer drive across Ayrshire

Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland is looking for people in Ayrshire to give the gift of time this year.

The charity are launching a volunteer drive, with a range of roles available including in Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland’s shops and boutiques, as a steward at one of the many fundraising events, or as a community volunteer supporting service users in local areas.

The drive is backed by local volunteer, Tom Mathers, from Prestwick, who has been a volunteer for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland for over five years and is involved in a variety of roles.

Having suffered two serious head injuries himself, Tom knows how crucial it is to have support in recovery.

And when he took early retirement from his air traffic control role, he knew exactly what he was going to do – become a volunteer for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

He said: “For me, it’s not about what I get out of volunteering but what I can give that is important.

“I see the improvement in people from the first time I get to know them and can see their progress as they recover from a stroke.

“It’s so rewarding to see someone get some of their independence back, even if it’s only a little bit.”

Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland is Scotland’s largest health charity, helping people living with the effects of chest and heart conditions, Long Covid, and stroke live life to the full.

The charity’s Hospital to Home service helps people with chest, heart and stroke conditions get the support they really need once they return home from hospital.

Services include support from specialist stroke nurses, community support workers, and volunteers, as well as the CHSS advice line and peer support groups.
