Golf: New manager Lee reveals big plans for Northenden

Lee Purves has become their new course manager at Northenden Golf Club.

Lee made the big move from the south of England, where he has worked for the past 13 years at a number of golf clubs, and decided to relocate so his wife could be closer to her Cheshire based family.

He says he is relishing working on the fine course and that he has a range of plans to implement in the coming years.

Lee outlined his career in green-keeping which began as an apprentice at Donnington Valley GC in 2008 where he gained his Level Two and Level three green-keeping qualifications.

He is also a very good golfer with a handicap of +1 and he is looking forward to be a playing member at Northenden.

Lee said: “I began doing very basic jobs and then learned a lot about all the aspects of the job over the next five years as I aimed to be a course manager. My next moves over the years were to the Cambridgeshire GC, Sandford Spring GC, Castle Royle GC and Mapledurham GC and this saw me move through the ranks to achieve my ambition to be course manager and again I learned a great deal about a range of different course requirements and team management.

“My wife and I wanted to move up North to be near to her family and I was delighted to become the course manager at Northenden in August. The club have been very supportive and want Northenden to go from strength to strength and are willing to invest in projects to improve the overall standard of the course.

“The next five years will see the club push forward with the plans in place and hopefully will take us to be a top level club and make us sustainable for the future. On arrival, after walking the site I could see the bones are there for a great course and with investment and wanting to change certain areas it could be a great overall course. The club directors and members, who have been great to me since I arrived, have the same vision and will give me their full support.

“I am amazed by the volume of golf in the North West and will be looking to see the club host top regional and county events in the coming years. The northern hospitality has been great and so friendly.”
