Residents from homeless supported housing in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, have been taking advantage of the great outdoors to improve their mental health and well-being.

As part of Sanctuary Supported Living’s Great Yarmouth Homeless Supported Housing, Woburn House provides support for adults aged 18 or over, who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

Walking The Waterways, was the first of Woburn’s Wellbeing Walks, which have been organised by project worker, Stuart Buchan.

He said: “Walking in the fresh air helps clear my head so I thought these walks would be a good opportunity for the residents to enjoy their local surroundings whilst looking after their mental health.

"We’re lucky to have the beach and The Waterways here, and this Time to Talk Day is a good motivator to think about ways to look after our mental health.”

Walking is a great way to keep fit, but the benefits for emotional well-being are just as important.

One Woburn House resident said: “As we walked, we talked, and enjoyed spotting the ducks, swans and herons. I’m looking forward to exploring the seaside on future Wellbeing Walks.”

Mental health has an enormous impact on residents’ health and well-being and forms a large part of Sanctuary Supported Living’s support to residents, as they work towards living independently and breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Beachcombing and picnics on the beach have already been planned along with cycling activities to help maintain residents’ well-being.
