Greater Manchester sports stars Helen Scott CBE and Mark Cueto MBE are pedalling for a purpose to support Greater Manchester women this International Women’s Day.
Two positives to come from the last two years have been the increase in people coming together and the innovative ways to stay connected – whether that’s spending time on Zoom or getting out in the fresh air together and Greater Manchester’s sports stars cyclist Helen Scott and rugby’s Mark Cueto are doing just this.
Greater Manchester charity Smart Works challenged their community to use this spirit for a cycle fundraiser ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8 in order to support unemployed women across Greater Manchester through pre-employment coaching and interview styling and coaching services.
Between March 1-8, over a hundred Greater Manchester fundraisers – individuals and businesses will be cycling 500 miles in their teams of five.
These include Greater Manchester’s Paralympian silver medal winner cyclist tandem pilot Helen Scott MBE and retired England rugby international and Sale Shark Mark Cueto MBE who is taking part as a member of his organisation’s team, Stockport-based 4th Utility.
Helen and Mark recognise the grit and determination of the charity’s beneficiaries and are inspired by the support for Smart Works in in their community – teams from over 20 Greater Manchester businesses are taking part and Smart Works Chair of Trustees Jan Iceton explains that for many of those taking part, it will be a real challenge.
“Last year, the Greater Manchester community raised a record £54,000, funding the charity’s work for six months, supporting unemployed women to ‘get the clothes, get the confidence, get the job’. This year we’re expanding our services as the work our needed more than ever. The pandemic has hurt women the most and we’re proud that so many individuals and businesses are standing with Greater Manchester’s women.”
You can take part in a 40 mile fundraising gravel ride on March 5 by visiting Trek Manchester’s Eventbrite listing or Facebook page.
