A 300 year old charity has donated £30,000 to help schools in Redcar.
The Sir William Turner Foundation in East Cleveland has been supporting education in Redcar for decades and two years ago it expanded to helping secondary schools.
Peter Sotheran, chair of the charity said: "Unfortunately our first round of support for the schools was somewhat eclipsed by the Covid restrictions. Most of the activities the foundation supported were cancelled"
However, this year the Sir William Turner Foundation has offered over £30,000 to support Redcar's three secondary schools, Kirkleatham Hall School and Redcar & Cleveland College.
- Sacred Heart School has been given £2500 for a monthly programme to help students overcome personal barriers and manage their workload
- Ryehills School has been given £2500 to launch a Reading Rewards scheme that encourages pupils to improve their reading skills
- Outwood Redcar has been given £7700 for 90 students to take part in sciences workshops at the Newcastle Life Centre
- Kirkleatham Hall School has been given £8135 for a year-long programme of outdoor activities to help to develop self-confidence and social skills
- Redcar & Cleveland College has been given £9660 across three departments to set up a virtual reality room, to provide a 6 month programme of adventure training and to provide a life-skills course
Sir William Turner was brought up in Kirkleatham near Redcar in the early 1600s and later became a successful businessman in London.
When he died in 1692 he left £5000, roughly £7m today, to build a free school at Kirkleatham. This building is now the Kirkleatham Museum.
After various developments and moves during the 19th and 20th centuries the school became Sir William Turner's Sixth Form College in Redcar.
The Sir William Turner foundation continues to support education in Redcar. It offers grants to cover the cost of activities and equipment that will 'enhance the education' of pupils who live or study in Redcar.
