Historic talk on the life of a canal engineer's widow

Cromford Mill and Belper North Mill Volunteers present their next Highlighting Heritage A Widow’s Tale: the Life of Margaret Outram (1778-1863).  The sudden death of the Cromford canal engineer and iron founder (at Ripley), Benjamin Outram in 1805 turned the world of his widow, Margaret, upside down.

With five children under five, huge debts, court cases and the loss of her home, lesser people might have crumbled, but not Margaret Outram. Her story reveals the strength of the human spirit in the face of enormous odds.

The talk will be given by Dr Peter Collinge, Honorary Research Fellow at Keele University. This talk is on Thursday, May 30, door open at 7pm and will be held at the Gothic Wharf, Cromford, parking in Cromford Mill carparks.

Tickets at £5 are available on the Cromford Mill website and from the shop in the Cromford Mill Yard. Buy now, the last two talks have been a sell out!

This is part of a series of talks that are being run jointly by the Arkwright Society at Cromford Mills and Belper Mill North Volunteers, and this latest topic shows that women in the early Victorian period often did far more than just look after their children.

Location: Cromford, Derbyshire
