Housebuilder supports project helping Bristol’s homeless

Bristol-based housebuilder Bellway South West has donated £500 to the charity, Help Bristol’s Homeless, to support its work with homeless people in the community.

Help Bristol’s Homeless (HBH) is a project dedicated to getting the homeless population in Bristol into safe and stable accommodation, and from there the charity aims to help them improve their lives and reach their potential.

Entirely funded through donations, HBH provides accommodation in the form of self-contained converted shipping containers, which are all fully fitted single-person accommodation units, located at the charity’s base in Spring Street, Bedminster, Bristol.

Other converted containers are used as shower blocks for rough sleepers, as well as a kitchen and a dining room. A wellbeing centre also provides support services in the form of advocacy, welfare and money checks, NHS health checks and advice, and paperwork and CV support.

The charity is run by volunteers and trustees, all of which have full-time employment alongside the work they do for the charity.

Zoradi Tucker, one of the charity’s trustees, said: “We want to thank Bellway South West for their kind support of our project. Their donation could be used to buy white goods for our next container, materials or supplies for the kitchen.

“Since the pandemic, it has been harder to get donations as our office is only open one day a week for a few hours, due to Covid restrictions. Everyone who works here is a volunteer and we are completely funded by donations – such as this one – in the form of money, food or essential items.

“Alongside the services we provide for our residents and rough sleepers, we also offer work such as cooking and cleaning so they can contribute to the project themselves and to their own wellbeing.

“We also provide signposting support for residents and rough sleepers and support our outreach partner charity in the form of meals, food and essential items like backpacks, with items needed inside them.

“Every resident at the project becomes part of team HBH and are encouraged to get involved in the project in some way so that they have ownership of their own recovery and support to turn their lives around.”
