Surrey veteran awarded for 1960s Malaysian military service

A SSAFA volunteer who lives near Kingswood, Surrey, has been presented with the Pingat Jasa medal from the Malaysian Government for his military services during the 1960s Malaysian conflict.

Veteran Clive Matthews had been out of uniform for 50 years when he contacted the Malaysian Embassy about the Pingat Jasa medal. The medal is awarded to all those who served during the Malaysian emergency.

Guildford student wins national photography competition

A student from Guildford College in Surrey has been named winner of this year's Holocaust Memorial Trust's photographic competition, which marks Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27.

Julia Rapaport, 18, was announced the winner of the competition, which had the theme of One Day. To find out what the theme meant to young people across the UK, the trust asked young people to send in a photo that finished the sentence ‘One day...'

West Horsley project to connect generations through storytelling

An innovative project to connect generations within the local community of West Horsley Place in Guildford, has been launched.

Our Stories – which has received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund - is an intergenerational project through which young people aged 15-18 will interview older people about their memories of West Horsley Place and the surrounding area, to create an oral history.

Southern Counties Drama Festival set for Oxted

An exciting week of festival drama is set for The Barn Theatre in Oxted, Surrey, this month, with 15 teams competing against each other in the only national competitive one-act drama festival in the UK.

The Southern Counties Drama Festival, will take place from Tuesday, February 22 to Saturday, February 26 with teams competing for the next round, The Eastern Area Final, which will take place at Norden Farm in Maidenhead on May 22.

New Guildford creative hub opens doors with first show

A brand new creative hub in the heart of Guildford where like-minded individuals, groups and organisations can share space and ideas, has opened its doors.

New House, located on Bedford Road, is set to be an inspiring and inclusive space for all to be creative and grow their artistic disciplines and businesses. The hub has 20 artist studios as well as the Davies Gilder Gallery, located on the ground floor.
