Inclusive sports programme launches at second Westminster venue
The programme, Sport For Confidence, is bringing people with mental or physical difficulties into the world of sport
Communities across Essex and London have had access to an inclusive sports programme, and finally more people in Westminster can get in on the action.
The inclusivity programme, Sport For Confidence, has already won awards for bringing sports to everyone no matter their ability.
The programme hopes to increase opportunities for those who face barriers getting into sports or other forms of physical activity in the most effortless way possible.
Following a successful launch in its first Westminster venue, Moberly Leisure Centre, Westminster City Council has given permission for the initiative to be expanded to a second venue within its borough.
From Wednesday, November 6, Sport For Confidence will run weekly multisport sessions at the Seymour Leisure Centre located at Seymour Place, Marylebone.
The sessions will then run every Wednesday between midday and 1pm, following the model which places an occupational therapist alongside a sports coach to deliver adaptive sessions which cater for individuals who would otherwise find it difficult to get involved in sport.
Currently, Moberly Leisure Centre delivers a range of activities including basketball, boccia, seated exercise, dodgeball and New Age Kurling - activities that the new location will replicate or change depending on needs.
People with a disability are half as likely to be active as the rest of the population.
But, Sport For Confidence is already having a massive impact on individuals living with a wide range of conditions including dementia, learning disabilities, mental health issues and physical impairments.
Proving that given the right environment and support, people with a disability will engage and the benefits extend way beyond the field of play.
