It's time for tea as Paignton volunteers brew up for success

TEA is served at Oldway thanks to the green-fingered gardeners helping to keep the historic Paignton building’s spectacular grounds in tip-top condition.

The Oldway Gardens Volunteer Group has re-opened its Tea Hut to cater for the hundreds of local people who are exploring the gardens during lockdown.

Takeaway drinks and pre-packed snacks are on the agenda. And, say the volunteers, they are selling like hot cakes.

Volunteers spokesman Jo Jones said: “We ran it last year during summer and autumn and have reopened. All proceeds go direct into the gardens.

“People are loving the fact that they can grab a coffee as they wander around the gardens. They are so pleased to see us back.”

The volunteers have been working daily on the formal gardens which surround the mansion.

“Having the tea hut open encourages people to come and see the work the gardeners have been doing,” said Jo.

“We’ve got a great bunch of volunteers who have been working really hard.
“Everybody wants to save Oldway, and this is all part of bringing Oldway back.”
