Kent hospice tree recycling initiative raises £57,000

TREE-MENDOUS: More than 3,000 households had their Christmas trees collected

Kent residents were able to have their unwanted Christmas trees collected from their doorstep thanks to a local charity initiative that saw a bigger demand for the service than ever before.

Over the course of two chilly weekends in January, volunteers and representatives from the Pilgrims Hospices in Ashford, Canterbury and Thanet collected more than 3,150 Christmas trees.  Each collection came with a small donation, raising an impressive £57,000 for local hospice care, exceeding the total from last year by more than £10,000.

BRAVING IT: The trees were collected whatever the weather

Pilgrims Hospices provide care and comfort to thousands of people in east Kent who are coming to terms with an illness that sadly cannot be cured. The charity support patients to live life as well as possible until the end of life, free from pain and distress.

With a generous donation received from the households who took part, the doorstep collection initiative continues to raise much-needed funds for the hospice that helps people facing a terminal diagnosis, and their families, to live well in every moment.

As part of this environmentally-friendly fundraising initiative, the Pilgrims branched out beyond Ashford after 11 years, encompassing Canterbury and Thanet districts as well.

Kate Duddell, Pilgrims Hospices fundraising manager said: "We can only provide the tree recycling service to the local community with the invaluable support of our much-loved and dedicated volunteers who donate their time, vehicles and services for local hospice care, we just couldn’t do it without them. We think you are all amazing"

The staff and volunteers at the Pilgrims want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported their charity fundraising scheme. Fundraising manager Kate added: “To everybody who registered their tree for collection, each and every donation makes a difference to the £11 million we have to fundraise each year in order to keep our services running."

With the support of the east Kent community and the campaign partners, the hospices can continue to provide skilled and compassionate end-of-life care to people living with a life-limiting illnesses.
