Kent runner to take on Beachy Head Marathon for Martha Trust
Despite vowing never to tackle the course again, a well-earned pasty awaits at the end of the hilly 26.2-mile challenge

On Sunday, October 24, Phil Allen, from Deal, will be tackling one the biggest off-road marathons in the country – The Beachy Head Marathon.
Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon, it is popular for its scenic and challenging route through the South Downs countryside.
Phil said:
“I have been running around six years now – it is really good for my health plus I find it bizarrely relaxing!”
The race starts at St Andrew’s School in Eastbourne, East Sussex, before following a very hilly route over the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters Country Park.
In light of the pandemic, a host of new safety measures will be employed with volunteers cheering on runners from a safe distance. Nevertheless runners there will still be some traditional course comforts and finish line pasties for all marathon finishers.
Despite vowing never to tackle the course again, after competing last year, he was inspired to take part to raise funds for Martha Trust.
The charity supports people with profound physical and multiple learning disabilities at their homes in Deal, Kent and Hastings in East Sussex.
He said:
“Seeing most of their events cancelled or postponed until 2021, I decided to do it for Martha and get some funding for the residents. I want to do more fundraising for them in the future too.
“Even if the area goes into a lockdown, I will complete locally and I am even considering doing an ultra marathon before Christmas.”

Kerry Banks, from Martha Trust, said:
“We are truly grateful to Phil for thinking of our residents and taking on this huge challenge – we wish him all the luck this weekend.”
