A district council has urged North West Leicestershire residents to pay their council tax by direct debit to ensure they promptly receive a £150 energy bill rebate.

The payments will help speed up the rebate for residents living in bands A to D and help towards energy bills.

The call comes after the government unveiled a council tax rebate scheme to support families with rising energy costs.

Councillor Roger Bayliss, the Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "With the cost of living increasing, we know many residents are struggling with their finances.

"We want to make sure residents get this vital help with their bills as soon as possible.

"Paying by direct debit will mean eligible households will receive the money straight into their bank account, so if you haven’t already, I urge you to sign up."

The one-off payment, made on behalf of the government, will be paid by local authorities to eligible households.

Households who pay council tax by direct debit, a safe, simple, and quick way to pay, will see the cash directly into their bank accounts.

The council will contact those who do not pay by direct debit and invite them to claim.

There will also be a discretionary rebate scheme for vulnerable residents or those who do not pay council tax who live in properties in council tax bands E to H.

There are around 38,324 properties in council tax bands A to D in North West Leicestershire.
