Letters to the Editor: One rule for Boris, another one for the rest of us
Ian is not happy with the way Boris Johnson has dealt with the pandemic.
This letter was written by Ian Michael Gibson, from Upton, Merseyside
In Spring last year, Boris Johnson’s unwillingness to lock down caused tens of thousands of people to die unnecessarily as confirmed by the recent report of a parliamentary committee which had a majority of Conservatives on it.
This included the discharge of many elderly patients suffering from Covid into care homes, creating a firestorm of unnecessary deaths, and took place because Tory austerity had reduced the number of available beds and the staff to look after them.
In September last year, Boris defied the advice of the Government’s own SAGE group of scientists and refused to lock down for two weeks as a circuit breaker to stop the spread of the virus, allowing it to grow out of control until at the end of October he had to institute a lockdown for the whole winter.
Again, tens of thousands of people died unnecessarily, with the death rate exceeding a thousand a day for long periods.
Britain had the highest death toll per million population out of all large European countries.
Despite the lockdown which meant a cancelled Christmas for us all, 10 Downing Street still went ahead with Christmas parties.
One rule for Boris, another one for the rest of us.
The lack of capacity in our run down health service means that NHS treatments for cancer, heart disease, joint replacements and other everyday ailments disrupted by having 8000 people in hospital with Covid and waiting lists have now reached a record of 5.7 million.
And now there is mad panic in the Government with the discovery of a new mutation- Omicron.
Recently, about 5,000 people have been dying every month from Covid, but despite this there has been no instruction to wear masks or work from home, and the booster campaign has been lethargic at best.
The reason for these delays is largely Westminster politics – the attitudes of Covid denial among Conservative MPs.
While the experts tell us to wear masks in crowded surroundings, including in Parliament, Boris is surrounded by a mass of Conservative MPs who are effectively on strike against their own Government’s advice.
Boris dares not follow the science because his own MPs won’t accept it.
Instead, they burble slogans about 'freedom' and 'tyranny' and people continue to die and the Government parties on.
