Life at The Little Theatre column: Death of a Salesman to open this Friday

Nobody dares whistle or mention the Scottish play, and Claude (the theatre ghost) is on his best behaviour as third time does seem to be the charm for Death of a Salesman, which opens this Friday (July 15).

Our audiences have been eagerly awaiting this classic play, originally scheduled for March 2020 then February 2022.  The show endures as the themes are as relevant now as they ever were.

The salesman in question is Willy Loman, a man looking back on his life with a mixture of rose tinting and regret. Societal measures of success seem to inspire and impair him as he fluctuates between feelings of determination and despair.

Andrew Sloman has been walking in these shoes on and off for over two years and is relishing the challenge of this bucket list role.  

Whilst it is within the confines of his deteriorating mind, we see Willy at many varied points of his career and personal life. The dream-like narrative lurches him and us about somewhat helplessly, but compellingly.

He is following some fine footsteps as previous portrayers include Dustin Hoffman, Brian Dennehy, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anthony Sher.

The cast of characters in Willy’s life and mind include his long suffering wife Linda, played by Helen Pickavance and his sons, Biff and Happy, played by Graeme Hunt and Thomas Ashcroft. The final cast also includes Helen Bennett, Fiona Billington, Leslie Cheeseman, Stephen Gill, Lucy Mozley, Steve Pritchard, and Chris Smalley.

Directors John Sharp and Robin Hirsch can soon sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour and hope you will come and support this superb show which runs until Saturday, July 23.

Tickets are available via the Little Theatre Southport website - or box office in person or via 01704 530 521 between 11am to 1pm – and from 6pm to curtain up on show nights.

You can now also book for our 2022 opener, the Youth Theatre musical production of The Wind in the Willows which will be performed from August 23-27 2022.

Bookings are also open for Sleeping Beauty. Our pantomime will run from Friday, December 16 to Monday, January 2.
