POWERFUL THEATRICAL MASTERPIECE: Graeme Hunt as Biff, Steve Pritchard as Ben and Andrew Sloman as Willy

Death of a Salesman opened last week at the Little Theatre with a huge sigh of relief from the cast and production team – and happily, a fantastic response from the audience!

This twice delayed production has been a real labour of love; a truly challenging theatrical masterpiece. It is immensely satisfying to hear people wax lyrical about both the performances, and impact of Arthur Miller’s ever pertinent study of human vulnerability and aspiration in the face of an uncaring world.

This is a powerful and moving play. It is obvious from feedback via social media and direct messages that this production has managed to successfully capture the raw truth and driving energy of the piece.

Comments have included: ‘Intense, compelling… brilliant!’. ‘The play was over too soon. It’s one I will think about for the coming days’. ‘Fantastic playwright – I would certainly recommend’. I was enthralled… I shed tears at the end. Really worth seeing’. ‘ Superb acting – I was blown away’. ‘A must see’.

Published author Jeff Weston took time to email the club to write -

‘I thought Andrew Sloman as Willy Loman was remarkable… I’ve seen this play four times (including with the famous Don Warrington at the Royal Exchange in Manchester) but Andrew brought something very special to the part – the madness, the self-deception, the anachronistic ‘poetry’ of the character. All the cast were superb. I was especially moved by Helen Pickavance (Linda Loman) who made me cry at the end and reflect on life hugely.

'I wish there had been a full house for the performance – it certainly deserved the applause; it was simply very moving indeed'.

Regional theatres have been working hard to replenish audiences since the pandemic; a few-years-ago shows like Death of a Salesman would have sold out.

We’d love to see people flock back to live theatre – as one recent convert said after seeing this: ‘went to see this last night… really enjoyed the whole experience. There was me thinking Thor was good at the cinema! Theatre is a whole different world!’
