Life at The Little Theatre column: It's time for Two 2

The doors open to our bar and our on stage boozer on Friday this week as the curtain lifts on our next play, Two 2.

Running from Friday, November 12 until Saturday, November 20, we invite you to pull up a bar stool and meet the landlord and landlady of the pub as well as their assorted customers and acquaintances. This is the first time a non-professional company has been given the rights to perform the play, so it is the hot ticket in town.

The play was penned by Jim Cartwright who was born in Lancashire in 1958. His first play, Road, was written in 1986 and won many awards before being adapted for television the following year. Two, the predecessor to Two 2, was written in 1989 when the pub trade was thriving.

Cartwright is known for his observational work that weaves humour and pathos together. In Two, the landlord and landlady play their regulars who drink in their busy pub.

Social landscapes have changed, and he scribed this follow up in 2016 – a time when many pubs had closed as habits have changed and costs have risen. It is just as relevant today, particularly as businesses deal with recovery.

Jacqui Padden and Ted Bullen play an assortment of characters.  Sadly their pub no longer has a host of regulars, but they do attract different sorts with their bingo, karaoke and speed dating evenings.  It is possible the only attendees getting their kicks are the students of the Karate class who rent the space.

Last week, director Sandra Unsworth told us that she had cried with laughter during rehearsals, but that the actors had also brought a lump to her throat at other points.

The show promises to be a real treat for these darkening nights, and tickets are available now online and from our box office.
