Life at the Little Theatre: Is everything rosy in this modern day 1950s paradise?

Have you ever yearned to exist in a different era, or maybe asked yourself when does nostalgia switch from daydreaming to delusion? Were things really better “back in the day?”

This is just one of the topics tackled in our next sparkling play at the Little Theatre. Home, I’m Darling is a modern play by Laura Wade that has won multiple awards and we were delighted to secure it for our 2023/2024 season.

In the play we meet Judy played by Natasha Proffitt. Judy has always dreamed of living the life of a 50’s domestic goddess and works hard to make her dream a reality.

Her husband Johnny (played by Edward James) is living his best life being the master of the house with dinner on the table, slippers ready and a nice cocktail waiting on his return from the office each night...but is everything rosy in paradise? Their friends, Marcus and Fran (Tony O’Keeffe and Ceri Watkins, previously seen on stage as a married couple in How The Other Half Loves), share their love of 50’s music and clothes but have problems of their own.

Judy's mum, Sylvia, (Dyan Ensenat) can’t understand her daughter’s chosen lifestyle and is not afraid to tell her some home truths about how things were in the real 1950s! The cast is completed by Johnny’s new boss Alex, played by Fiona Billington, who is having to come to terms with her new colleague’s unusual lifestyle...

With a background of classic 50’s music and nostalgic touches throughout, this is a thought-provoking comedy of modern relationships, retro-lifestyles and exploring the role of women in society and whether this has really changed.

COMING TO TERMS: Johnny’s new boss Alex, played by Fiona Billington

Home, I’m Darling is directed by Steve Pritchard and opens this Friday 20th October at 7:30pm. Our new season layout means that the second show on Saturday 21st October will be a 2:30pm matinee followed by a Q&A in the bar with the cast and director.

The show then re-opens on Monday 23rd October and runs at 7:30pm each evening until Saturday 28th October.
