ALMOST SHOWTIME: The cast of Lilies on the Land are preparing for the show

Joseph’s coat of many colours has moved on, Southport Dramatic Club have completed their main season of shows and it is almost time for our annual bar production which is staged each June. Our licensed bar is a well serviced performance space, with lighting rigs and numerous options for set up. Next time you join us after a show in the auditorium, look up and you will see the evidence!

This Sunday, 4th June we welcome back the Phil Shotton Big Swing Band. When they perform in the bar, they do so lounge style – the band take up the rear corner and the audience sit at chairs and tables.

Following this, we will have Lilies on the Land being performed in the bar from Tuesday 13th to Saturday 17th June 2023. Often, the bar productions are performed “in the round” with the audience on all four sides.  

For this year’s production, Lilies on the Land, the audience will be sat on three sides of the stage. The capacity is 100, so you should book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Lilies on the Land is an engaging and poignant drama charting the personal journeys of four women who sign up to join the Women’s Land Army during World War II devised by The Lions Part in 2001. In order to research they invited contributions from ex-Women’s Land Army servicewomen and were rewarded with memories and anecdotes as well as newspaper cuttings and memorabilia.

Follow up interviews were arranged and eventually four clear characters emerged to tell their tales of how they came to sign up as well as their experiences (and those of their friends and family) throughout the war. Throughout the play we also meet and hear about other women who signed up, various farmers and soldiers of multiple nationalities. It is an educational and emotional show, not to be missed.
