Life at The Little Theatre: Lilies at the Bar

GETTING THERE: Rehearsals for Lilies on the Land are in full swing

BOS have set the stage alight in many colours as they have brought the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat to audiences this week. They will be bringing this to you every night until Saturday 27th May at 7:30pm and there is also a matinee on Saturday at 2:30pm.

Currently in rehearsal we have our annual bar production, Lilies on the Land. Paul Wilkinson is bringing his delightful experience and vision to this slice of social history.

Lilies on the Land is based on the real life testimony of women who signed up to the Women’s Land Army during World War 2. Our four strong cast (plus swing) are thoroughly enjoying bringing to life the stories of Peggy (Lisa Tatler), Margie (Jen Corcoran), Vera (Marilyn Fletcher Hill) and Poppy (Wendy Cox) as well as playing their various family members, bosses and assorted characters they encountered throughout their service.

The setting of the bar makes the production far more intimate as the audience is sat on three sides on this occasion and very close to the action. You will be transported to another time, where a mere box can be anything from a dressing table, to a tractor, to a cow. Sound and music from the technical team and the actors adds to the immersive atmosphere as you are taken on an interesting and emotional journey.

BONDED: "One thing is for sure, the shared experience bonded the Land Girls and it has done with our cast."

It is hard for us to imagine in this day and age what it must have been like to travel somewhere new, in a time of great uncertainty. The women had little experience of the labours they would need to take on, nor any idea how long the war would last.

This piece explores this from how each woman signed up and her expectations, to the mixed realities that they encountered. One thing is for sure, the shared experience bonded the Land Girls and it has done with our cast.
