Life at The Little Theatre: The last week of Home, I'm Darling

This week the Southport Dramatic Club continue to present Laura Wade’s award winning observational drama, Home, I’m Darling. The play cleverly explores societal change and gender roles.

The play starts with an open stage where we see the picture perfect home shared by married couple, Judy and Johnny. Their affinity for the fifties is a shared interest that they have immersed themselves in.

At the start of the play, they are describing being disgustingly happy and all looks rosy. Judy sees Johnny off to work with his sandwiches in his briefcase.

Later she is dismayed to discove he has been to the modern shopping precinct from her friend Fran. Fran also enjoys a fifties frock, but continues to work outside the home and describes her most complex recipe of the week as “pierce film lid”.

It is telling when Judy talks of her disdain for the precinct that she feels they should have kept the façade of the old factory that was torn down to make way for the modern structure. Judy’s mum Sylvia thinks her whole life is façade…and the cracks are beginning to show.

Johnny is not doing well at work – a problem for the one salary life. When Judy invites his boss Alex over for cocktails, it brings an unwelcome dose of reality into the supposedly blissful abode.

Fran and her husband Marcus also break the news that they won’t be going to the fifties weekend and they are revealed to have problems of their own when colleagues of Marcus have a different attitude to things than he does.

Along the way Judy learns that her view of her own past may be as rose tinted as her view of the time before she was born. When Johnny insists that honesty is best, Judy is forced to open her eyes and evaluate who she is and what she wants.

Home, I’m Darling runs at 7:30pm each evening until Saturday 28th October.

Also in rehearsal we have classic thriller House Guest which will be performed 10-18 November.
