Lincolnshire Folk Tales Project invites public to series of free events

The 'Lincolnshire Folk Tales Origins, Legacies, Connections, Futures' project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and hosted by Nottingham Trent University, explores the origins, legacies, connections and futures of Lincolnshire folk tales. It is intended to generate wider engagement with local heritage from writers, scholars, and the public.

The project's lead investigator, Dr Rory Waterman, and research fellow, Dr Anna Milon, record, preserve, and facilitate the re-interpretation of widely known and obscure Lincolnshire folk tales via scholarly, creative and community-oriented outputs. To achieve this, the researchers are collaborating with a range of stakeholders and partners.

They include Heritage Lincolnshire, Adverse Camber, Five Leaves Press, the University of Lincoln, and Lincolnshire Life magazine. The project offers events for the public, created with Heritage Lincolnshire and Time Will Tell Theatre. The events, taking place in Lincoln, Grimsby, and Bourne over the summer and autumn, include myth-making workshops, which are suitable for the whole family, and storytelling and folk music performances. All events are free to attend.

Other outputs include an anthology of folk tales, reimagined by writers and poets with a Lincolnshire connection. The anthology is due for publication from Five Leaves Publications early in 2025. To whet your appetite, you can check out the guest blog post section on the project website.

The project website offers a collection of Lincolnshire folk tales and customs and an interactive map locating them in the landscape. The organisers said the map is constantly growing and evolving, and they have welcomed people to get in touch if they would like to contribute a story or location.
