Llanelli Beat the Street physical game enters final week
Double points are up for grabs in the last week of the town-wide game
The final push for points has started as Beat the Street, the giant game taking place across Llanelli draws to a close.
Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to move more and to get active
This final week is the Go Celebrate theme and the game ends of November 9.
To encourage players to make one final push, every Beat Box in the game will be giving out double points during the final week.
The game will come to an end at 7pm on Wednesday evening when the leader board will then be taken down and the winners announced shortly after the competition.
More than 6,500 people have signed up and have together walked, cycled, wheeled, run and scooted an incredible 40,000 miles so far in the competition.
Currently, Ysgol Gymreag Ffwrnes tops the total points leader board, while Llangennech and Stebonheath are in second and third place respectively.
Mark Bryant who is playing in the Clwb Lles Ysgol y Strade team, says the game is a great way to discover new parts of the town.
He said: “It’s been great and although we’re familiar with the area, we’ve seen parts of the town we haven’t seen before.
"Our usual route is along the Millennium Coastal Path but this has helped us find different and varied routes.
“My wife and I are already keen walkers and try to walk for 30 minutes in the evenings after work but Beat the Street Llanelli has helped motivate us to go further to tap Beat Boxes to get points and to hear the sounds.
"Weather permitting, I’m also going out at lunch times on my bike and since the game started, I’m recording higher and higher numbers of miles.
“We have really enjoyed the game and it’s a great thing to do to encourage people to walk more - especially children.”
Councillor Philip Warlow, Llanelli Town Mayor, said: “Unbelievably, we are now moving into ‘Go Celebrate Week’, the final week of Beat the Street.
“The game has really been a hot topic of conversation for the past few weeks and it has been fantastic to see everyone getting active as a community.
We’ve heard fantastic stories from people who have shared their experiences about getting more active, going further and really feeling better as a result of taking part.
“The Beat the Street game itself is just the start though – when the game comes to an end, we’ll then continue to work with the local community to ensure that these healthy lifestyle habits are put into action and players are signposted to activities and community groups that they might not have known about before.”
