From the Southport Macmillan Centre team, Southport, Merseyside

As this is our last column of 2023, we would like to look back on the year that has passed. We have had a very busy year in the Centre, with support groups meeting regularly, two HOPE (help to overcome problems effectively) courses and three Health and Wellbeing Events.

We would like to thank Southport College and the Cherish Centre for hosting our events. It has been lovely to see so many of you, friends old and new.

We hope that you have enjoyed our activities if you have been able to take part. We had a fabulous Spring Fayre and a wonderful World’s Biggest Coffee Event at Holy Trinity Parish Hall in September. Thanks to all who attended and donated their time and gifts for our events.

This year we have started some new activities, a Breast Cancer Support Group, a new Walking Group in Ainsdale and a monthly Coffee and Chat meeting with interesting speakers. We have been focusing on being more active and have a new member of our Cancer Navigator Team who is able to support people who wish to increase their physical activity.

On that theme, we have had several 5K Your Way meetings in partnership with Southport Parkrun and we have two new activity classes, Chair-Based Exercise and Yoga. With more and more evidence emerging about the benefits of exercise for people living with cancer, we hope to continue to develop our activities and to offer encouragement and support.

Finally, Christmas can be a difficult time and we would like you to know that we are here for you if you need support. The Southport and Formby Macmillan Centre will be open until 4pm on Friday, 22nd December, and although we are closed for the Christmas Bank Holidays, we are re-opening on Wednesday 27th December, closing only for New Year’s Day. Please call in or telephone if you need to talk over the festive period.
