Welcome to the latest edition of our monthly article for the Southport Visiter. Many thanks to all those who attended and supported our World’s Biggest Coffee Event on Friday, 29th September, this year.  

We had great fun raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, with a lovely afternoon of music, stalls, companionship and of course cake at Holy Trinity Parish Hall in Southport.

We are very fortunate to have a wide range of interesting and achievable walking routes in Sefton, which are manged and supported by Sefton Council and the Active Walks Team. Walking can give great health benefits, especially when done with friends or in a group.

Southport Macmillan Centre has three walks featured in Sefton’s latest Walking and Cycling Newsletter. Our regular weekly walk, meeting at 10.30am on Tuesday mornings at the Atkinson has been running for several years, but we have begun a new fortnightly Macmillan Walk in Ainsdale on the first and fourth Monday of the month, meeting at Ainsdale Medical Centre at 10.30am.

Our Feet First Friday walks is for those who wish to go a little further afield and takes place on the last Friday of the month at various locations at 1pm. There is more and more evidence about the benefits of physical activity for people experiencing cancer and other health conditions.

Our walks take place at a gentle pace, so that you can build up your confidence and your strength. If you are interested in joining us, just come along, you will be very welcome. Alternatively, contact the Centre for more details.

The Sefton Walking and Cycling Newsletter is available in local libraries, and we have copies in the Centre too. As well as our Macmillan Walks, the newsletter contains information on a variety of other walks across the Borough.

There is something taking place every day of the week, with a level of difficulty to suit all. Why not put on your warm clothes and join us for a walk in the autumn sunshine.

We are very keen to encourage our Centre users to be more active and if you are interested in building up your physical activity levels, we can provide individual support and encouragement and help you to find an exercise programme that suits your needs. We also have weekly yoga and chair-based exercise sessions.

On Friday, 24th November, at 1.30pm, we are holding a very special Winter Health and Wellbeing Event at the Cherish Centre on Albert Road in Southport. This event is for anyone affected by cancer in the Southport and Formby area.

There will be community stalls with information on Keeping Warm and Well in Winter, music, entertainment and ‘Christmassy’ refreshments. Please get in touch with us at the Centre and book a place if you wish to come along. It should be a very enjoyable afternoon.
