The local Mayor has planted an English Oak tree to mark Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Councillor Tony Nixon, Mayor of Stafford Borough, planted the tree in the award-winning Victoria Park, Stafford in Staffordshire.

He was joined by Councillor Carolyn Trowbridge, Cabinet Member for Leisure.

The planting was part of the national 'Queen's Green Canopy' initiative to celebrate the jubilee.

Victoria Park will host a four-day event over the long bank holiday weekend as part of the celebrations, with a beacon lit on Thursday, June 2.

The event is a collaboration between operators of the park's Alberts Café and Stafford Borough Council.

There will be live music, food and other entertainment.

A 'royal' tea party has also been arranged by the borough council for Sunday, May 29 for residents who were born in the same year as Queen Elizabeth ll - 1926.

The local authority has also received more than 20 requests from people wanting to hold street parties, after waiving the cost of providing road closures for communities to celebrate with their neighbours during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.
