Warrington Masters made a welcome return to competition swimming at Carlisle over the weekend with Graham Padgett setting a new British Record in the 75-79 Age Group when winning the 100m Backstroke.
That was one of 11 gold medals and one silver. Mark Jones had a busy two days with his sixteen events yielding eight golds, six silvers and two bronze. Another local, Judy Brown also had a successful weekend with six golds and a silver.
There was a large turn out for the inaugural “Ice Challenge” at Eccleston Delph, organised by Neil Thomson, where swimmers had to swim one mile in water of 6.7c.

After a stormy morning, conditions for the event improved with even a spot of sunshine. The Men’s championship was won by James O’Neill. Second place went to English Channel swimmer Stephen O’Brien from Wigan. There was a tremendous combat for third place with Ironman Steven Walton just ahead of Steve Ashley and Andrew O’Neill finishing in fifth place.
Women’s champion was Anne Lomax and Alison Elisabeth Mather second. Third place went to Sarah Nordman followed by Elaine Platt. In the warmth of Dubai, Hoylake and City of Liverpool’s, Ellis Cleworth, who is part of the Swim England DiSE programme, produced some superb performances reaching the finals of the 200m,100m and 50m Butterfly events, setting a Personal Best in heats of the latter.

Wirral Metro coach, Martin Brookes has been selected as one of the coaches that are part of the Swim England National Event Camps. He will be concentrating on the Freestyle group, working with some of the very best swimmers in the country.
Looking ahead, The City of Liverpool Spring Meet takes place on the weekend of March 19 & 20 with the closing date for entries being next Friday, February 25 at 12 noon.
