A local Rotary club has raised almost £10,000 to support the people of Ukraine.
After receiving a message from their twin club in Poland, Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club - which is based in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire - decided to raise money to help.
The Rotarians at Inowroclaw, Poland are supplying transport and accommodation to Ukrainian refugees.
They are also offering psychological support to children who have lost parents following the Russian invasion.
Alan Cartwright, North East district governor, said: "The public know that Rotary clubs work for the common good though probably few realised how quickly and effectively we are able to respond.
"This is a great example of how we can use our twin clubs to cross borders and get funds where and when they are needed."
Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club originally pledged 1,000 euros in support of the work.
Members then added their own donations and they have now raised more than £8,300.
The money will be sent to their colleagues in Poland.
Alan Clifton MBE, president of Erimus, said: "We can use our long standing friendships across our national borders to ensure any donations are fully utilised without waste or delay."
Mike Overy, Rotary Teesside’s assistant governor, said: "Our membership are always seeking effective ways to use charitable funds.
"The connections mean we can have confidence that all of the contributions will be delivered on the ground where they are most needed."
