MSP hails UK Government investment in North Ayrshire mobile network

Conservative MSP Jamie Greene has hailed the UK Government’s  investment in new mobile phone masts for North Ayrshire.

The move is aimed at  improving coverage in rural areas.

The project forms part of a £1bn UK-wide project to help tackle "notspots" - places where there is no mobile phone service, which is common in certain parts of North Ayrshire and Arran.

The project known as the Shared Rural Network programme will increase 4G coverage from all operators from 42 per cent to at least 74 per cent of landmass once complete in 2024 at the earliest.

The exact location for the masts in North Ayrshire are yet to be confirmed, however it is expected that they will be focused on rural areas, with more than 100 new masts going up across Scotland as a whole.

Commenting Jamie Greene, West Scotland MSP, said:

“I am delighted by the UK Government announcement of new investment to help address poor coverage in North Ayrshire – we have all experienced the annoyance of having a patchy signal.

“This investment could massively improve coverage in rural areas and increasingly make “nonspots” a thing of the past.

“As we start to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, the project will also help provide a boost to North Ayrshire’s economy and local businesses when it is fully up and running.”
